Story Of Rakshabandhan

It is believed based on Bhagavata Purana and Vishnu Puran.

When King Bali completed 110 Yagna. That time Gods started to fear that with the power of Yagna, King Bali would also capture the Swarglok (heavenly world), so all the gods came to Lord Vishnu with a request to protect the Swarglok. After which Vishnu appeared in front of King Bali holding the Brahmin form and asked for alms. In alms, the king promised to give them three steps of land. But only then Balis Guru Shukra Dev recognized Lord Vishnu holding the Brahmin form and alerted Bali about it but the king did not turn away from his word and donated three steps of land. During this time, Vishnu in the form of Vamana measured heaven in one step and the earth in the second step. Now it was the turn of the third step, but where should they put it? On seeing the third step of Vamana moving, the king got upset, he could not understand what to do now and then he went ahead and put his head at the feet of Vaman Dev and said that you should put the third step here. In this way, the kings right to live in heaven and earth was taken away and he was forced to live in the Patal. Then Bali requested Lord Vishnu to stay in his palace. Lord Vishnu agreed to this request. But Goddess Lakshmi was upset with Lord Vishnus Patal Lokas residence. After this, Maa Lakshmi went to King Balis place and tied the holy thread to Bali and made her brother. On this, Bali asked Lakshmi to ask for her desired gift. Goddess Lakshmi told King Bali that he should free Lord Vishnu from the promise and Lord Vishnu would live in her palace (Vaikunth). Bali accepted this.

Thus began the tradition of Raksha Bandhan, on this day sisters tie a sacred thread on their brothers arm and wish for their good health, wellbeing, and prosperity and in return brothers promise to protect their sisters.
